Washington County Economic Growth Partnership — The mission of the Washington County Economic Growth Partnership is to increase job opportunities through business expansion and recruitment efforts…and to promote growth and improved quality of life for the citizens of Washington County. The Washington County Community Foundation's goal is to improve the quality of life in Washington County. Their organization helps people make a difference by promoting the spirit of giving and investing in people and solutions to shape enduring, effective responses to community needs and opportunities. As a community service, the WCCF also provides a Community Calendar which lists many area events. The City of Salem, Indiana — Launched September, 2004, this site includes an inside look at all of the City's Departments and the day-to-day operations of this progressive community building for its long-range future. In-Depth coverage is featured in many of their departments including a searchable database of all burials at Crown Hill Cemetery, established in 1824. Also covered is a review and graphical display of the City's major renovation of the Salem Municipal Airport. Due for completion by 2012, the airport's expansion will include lengthening its runway to 4,000 FT. thereby enabling access by light to medium size corporate aircraft. Salem Community Schools — Where reliance on trust and collaboration create an environment that enhances the success of their students and their employees. They conduct the business of preparing the children of their district for the future by using methods that are based on both the most current research and practice in education as well as the specific needs and wishes of their patrons. County-owned Delaney Park is north of Salem and features an 88-acre lake and 187 acres of woods and open spaces for outdoor recreational activities.-The County's Park & Recreation Office is also located at the Delaney Park facility. The Depot Rail Road Museum — Featuring many rail road artifacts from days gone by, The Depot is a reconstruction of the Monon Railroad Depot that stood on South Main St. at the rail crossing for many decades. The display features a large HO Gauge model rail road layout in its basement. The Lanning House, one of many B&B Inns throughout the region, and The Depot, are both part of The John Hay Center which includes The Stevens Memorial Museum and Pioneer Village. Salem Speedway, which was opened in 1947, continues to be an action-packed half-mile, high-banked oval track which features stock, midget and sprint races. Over the years, it has hosted many of the best-known names in automobile racing. Spring Mill State Park near Mitchell, Indiana features a restored pioneer village, camping and fishing and plenty of out-of-doors activities. Accomodations include a full-service inn and plenty of camp sites. At nearby Mitchell is the home of astronaut Virgil "Gus" Grissom, one of the seven original NASA astronauts. The Gus Grissom Memorial is located nearby.- The Knobstone Trail is a very scenic area in adjoining Clark County.---- Clark State Forest is one of the Midwest's most unspoiled natural areas in southeastern Indiana Historic West Baden Springs Hotel is located in West Baden, Indiana and just just 40 minutes from Salem. Under recent rennovation, it is owned by the Indiana Historic Landmarks Foundation. - Another favorite stop in Southern Indiana is Corydon, the state’s first State Capitol. The historical capitol building is the centerpiece of the town square. Corydon is 35 minutes south of Salem. The small river community of Madison on the Ohio River is a trip back in time and features restored buildings in its downtown historic district. Madison is 45 minutes east of Salem, a favorite for visitors to Southern Indiana.--- Bedford, Indiana, 45 miles northwest of Salem, is the Limestone Capital of the world. # # # |
