What is Purdue Extension?

Purdue Extension provides educational programs and materials that focus on the specialties of Land-Grant Universities: Agriculture and Natural Resources; Consumer and Family Sciences; Leadership and Community Development; 4-H Youth Programs.

The Cooperative Extension Service is one of the nation's largest providers of scientific research-based information and education. It's a network of colleges, universities, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, serving communities and counties across America. The Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service program areas are

Agriculture and Natural Resources

Extension educators with agricultural and natural resource specialties offer programs and information on agricultural production and financial management for farmers, food and fiber processors, manufacturers and consumers. We also provide expertise in environmental issues, natural resource conservation and land use.

Consumer and Family Sciences

Consumer and Family Sciences Extension specialists and educators provide education to people. We:
o help communities analyze, identify and meet the needs of families.
o train volunteers and paraprofessionals to assist in areas of critical concern to families.
o motivate people to become leaders in address community issues.
o collaborate with agencies, community organizations, and educational groups to address the needs of families.

Leadership and Community Development
Leadership training and information on economic development, government financing, community improvement programs, and land-use planning are just some of the ways Purdue Extension works with local communities to address problems.

4-H and Youth Development
A dedicated network of Extension educators, parents, local leaders and volunteer staff, makes Indiana 4-H one of the most valued youth programs in the state. Purdue Extension youth educators develop individual talents, life skills and leadership abilities among Indiana's young people through the traditional venue of 4-H clubs and county fairs, but also through field-tested school enrichment materials and local-led community programs.

Family Nutrition Program

A Family Nutrition Advisor through the Family Nutrition Program (FNP) works with families of limited resources to offer food preparation and food safety lessons face-to-face in homes. This person works from referrals from several social service agencies in the county.
