SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT DISTRICT

Over the years, solid waste management has become much more than taking your solid waste to the local dump. As we all are generators of solid waste, either as individuals, businesses or industry, we are all responsible for its disposal. If an item has potential to recycle, you will find that many items can easily be recycled in Washington County. Drop-Trailers are located in Salem, Pekin, Campbellsburg, Little York, and at the county landfill. Any solid waste that is not recyclable should be taken to the Washington County Landfill for disposal. The landfill is located just northwest of Salem. The hours are Monday thru Friday 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Saturday 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (phone number 812-883-4811). We are closed only on Sundays and major holidays. This is the only permitted landfill located in Washington County. Best of all, if you are hauling your own non-demolition solid waste in your own vehicle, and as a resident of Washington County, there is no charge for you to use the facility. WE DO NOT ACCEPT ANY OUT-OF-COUNTY SOLID WASTE UNDER ANY C0NDITION There is a lot of information in this section. I hope you will take the time to read it and see if it gives you any new ideas on how to manage your solid waste. If you have any questions or comments please let me know. My office telephone number is 812-883-3039 or write to Mike Goering, Manager, Washington County SWMD, Courthouse, Salem, Indiana 47167. Again, good luck with your recycling, and let’s all work together in Washington County to reduce the amount of our solid waste being taken to the landfill.
