The City of Salem’s curbside recycling program makes recycling convenient and easy for those who would like to participate. A special vehicle owned by the City of Salem makes rounds every other week to make collections. Salem residents are urged to put their containers on the sidewalks early the morning of the collection or even the night before. Call 883-4265 or 883-2401 for the day of collection in your area. [Related - City of Salem Streets & Sanitation] Containers can be purchased from the Solid Waste office for $2 each. Mike Goering, director of the Washington County Solid Waste Management District, suggested that each household in the city have at least two of the 14-gallon containers for recycling. Fill out the form below and mail in or come by the Solid Waste office at the courthouse basement. Any resident of Washington County can purchase these recycling containers for $2 each. 1. Paper - All newspapers, magazines, catalogs, used books, telephone books, newspaper inserts, white paper, and any other clean paper can be recycled in the curbside containers. The red recyclers have holes in the bottom for drainage. If it is going to rain and you set out paper to be recycled, try to cover it with something to prevent a mess. 2. Cardboard - You may recycle corrugated, lightweight, cereal and other boxes in this new program. Grocery sacks and paper feed sacks qualify too. All sizes of boxes must be broken down into a manageable size. For appliance boxes, try cuttling them into small sections. Place all large cardboard on top of red container. 3. Glass - All colors and sizes of glass, food and beverage containers will be recycled from the curb. There is no need to remove the label from the glass before discarding. It is a good idea, however, to rinse out the container first. Leave containers whole, if possible. Do not break up glass. 4. Tin - Cans are welcome and should be rinsed out first. Leaving the labels on is fine. Aluminum foil and pie pans, and other miscellaneous metals can be placed in the tin container. Aerosol cans cannot be recycled and must be put with your garbage. 5. Aluminum Cans - These cans should be empty. Rinsing them out is not required. You can flatten the cans to save space. 6. Used Motor Oil - The curbside program will also reclaim used oil from residents. It must be placed in a suitable container, such as a milk jug or can, and placed on the curb with other recyclables. Make sure the container is secure and will not spill on the ground. 7. Wet-Cell Batteries - These will also be recycled. Use good judgment when placing these on the sidewalk. Don’t set out cracked batteries as the acid might leak out. Try and set them on a piece of cardboard.
